WHAT IS AAC+??

EdgeRadio encodes its audio streams in the AAC+ format.

So what exactly does that mean? The AAC+ encoding allows us to stream in Stereo at the low bit rate of 32kbps while maintaining a sound quality on par with a Stereo stream encoded at 128kbps.

The 32k bit-rate uses a lot less bandwidth...yours, and ours. That means the stream will be much more stable and less susceptible to our mutual enemy, the dreaded scourge that is 'network instability.' Also, the stream is much more viable for slower and dial-up connections, and should function well over most wireless networks.

And the icing on the cake: streaming at 32k is much more cost effective than streaming at 96k. So much so that we've added a second, music-only stream. With AAC+ we can now have two streams at virtually half the cost of a single 96k stream...

It's all good, right? Well, like most things, there's a downside to streaming in AAC+: the encoding isn't compatible with all media players.

THE DOWNSIDE: WHICH PLAYER WORKS WITH AAC+

i-TUNES?  Nope. No codec or plug-in available at the moment. Mac users must download the free VLC Player.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER?  Yes, but you must download a free plug-in from ORBAN and use a specific format when accessing AAC+ streams.

REAL PLAYER?  Yes, as long as you have RealOne version 10 or above.

WINAMP?  Yes. This is the best, most versatile media player for WINDOWS based systems, and it's FREE.

GET THE PLAYERS & PLUG-INS

So listening to low bit-rate, high quality audio streams makes sense, right? Whether it's EdgeRadio or something else, bandwidth-friendly AAC+ is the way to go. We recommend using WINAMP, but there are options for most popular media players.

VLC Media Player for MAC

Since i-Tunes will not play AAC+ streams, Mac folk have only one option: the VLC Player. The software is free, and there's also a version for Windows based systems.

Once you've downloaded & installed VLC, just enter in the URL for the EdgeRadio Stream you wish to tune into:

EdgeRadio's live, on-air stream: http://sc4.spacialnet.com:12942

EdgeRadio's web-only, all music stream: http://sc3.spacialnet.com:23088

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER

A two step process: First, snag the latest WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER; click on the WMP logo to download the latest software from the official webpage. Next, hover over the ORBAN logo and right click/save as to download the AAC+ plug-in.

Once you've downloaded & installed the plug-in, enter the URL for our streams into WMP. Note that the URL format is somewhat different:

EdgeRadio's broadcast stream:    icyx:/sc4.spacialnet.com:12942

EdgeRadio's All Muzic stream:    icyx:/sc3.spacialnet.com:23088

REAL PLAYER

Just snag the latest version of RealPlayer:

Once you've downloaded & installed RealPlayer, just enter in the URL for the EdgeRadio Stream you wish to tune into:

EdgeRadio's live, on-air stream: http://sc4.spacialnet.com:12942

EdgeRadio's web-only, all music stream: http://sc3.spacialnet.com:23088

WINAMP

This one's the bomb if you've a WINDOWS system. Go for the free version with no add-ons.

Now you're ready to rock.    Happy streaming!
